68th Independence Day Celebrations

Sri Lanka 68th Independence Day Celebrations was held on February 12th 2016 at the Kapiolani Community College Dining Room. The Chief guest for the evening was His Excellency Prasad Kariyawasam Sri Lanka ambassador to the United States of America.

Among the distinguished guests were Governor and Mrs David Ige, Governor and Mrs. George Ariyoshi, US Pacific Commander ADM Harry Harris and Bruni Bradley, ADM Scott Swift Commander Pacific Fleet and Theresa Swift, Commander Marine Forces, APCSS Director Dan Leaf and Dr. Amy Alvin, AMB Charley Salmon, AMB Rtd James Moriarty, AMB Lauren Moriarty, members of the Consul Corps of Hawaii and their spouses, guests from the East West Center, guests from the State Government and the University, Hawaiian/ American Community and the Sri Lankan Community.

The program for the evening started with a blessing from Venerable H. Vihhavi Maha Thera. The lamp lighting ceremony was performed by Ambassador Kariyawasam, the Governors and the heads of the military. The National Anthem of Sri Lanka was sung in Sinhalese and then in Tamil. The National Anthems of the United States of America and Hawaii followed.

The Hon. Consul for Sri Lanka in Hawaii Kusuma Cooray recognized the VIP Guests and introduced the chief guest HE Prasad Kariyawasam. Ambassador Kariyawasam delivered a brilliant speech. Dancers from "Thath Jith " Sri Lankan Dance Academy LA, flew in specially for the event. They thrilled the guests with their performance and also admired their exotic dance apparel. The guests enjoyed the dinner that highlighted a few Sri Lankan specialties. The fancy desserts were a hit as usual.
