Sinhala and Tamil New Year Celebrations in Hawaii 2012
April 14, 2012
The Sri Lankan Community in Hawaii met at the Heeia Park to celebrate Sinhala and
Tamil New Year. This is an event that Dr. and Mrs Dayananda Vithanage has organized
annually for the last 22 years or so. It has become a tradition the Sri Lankan community
in Hawaii look forward to.
It was a sunny Saturday morning, and the celebrations started with the traditional
"boiling milk"; amidst the cheering the pot of milk boiled and spilled over abundantly,
denoting good luck for all. Lunch was the big attraction. The communiy pot luck lunch
table was laden with Sri Lankan rice and curry dishes, pickles and condiments. Over eating
is a New Year tradition and with all the wafting aromas of the delicious preparations
it was hard not to!
The afternoon was fun filled, when many particated in traditional games. The serious
cricket match was enoyed by all. The early afternoon Sinhala Avurudu tea table was
spectacular! All the traditional sweet meats were there and to wind up there was the
cup-o-tea. All the guests got a take away bag of Sri Lankan sweet meats prepared by
the community. From kids to grandparents, they all had a fun day; and all agreed
to meet again next year to celebrate Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
